Day Paintings and Plein Aire Studies

painting done en plein aire at Sedona, Arizona
I am going to start a series to go along with my plein air painting classes that will be offered this spring. People often ask what is plein aire painting. Simply, it is painting outside in nature. Painting in this venue is challenging but oooooh so rewarding!
For me this is still life painting using nature. It is a moment in time that stands still for me and engulfs me in its allure. There are challanges to be sure, but these are not unsurmoutable. You need to catch the shadows and light early in your painting so you are not chasing your light. Also, it teaches you to focus and minimize. I do know some plein aire painters that try and capture all that they see-I'm not one of those. For me, at least, it is about the moment and the impressions that I want to capture of that moment. My favorite scenes are ones involving water. The play of shadows and light and reflections just sets my heart singing.
In future blogs, I am going to try and break it down for you as to materials, helpful things to take while painting in nature, tricks that stay off the bugs-you know-all those important things that make your plein air experience better.
If you have any questions, please contact me thru the contact page and I will be happy to answer them regarding this subject.
In my next blog, I will cover the essentials that I have found make my nature painting experience more enjoyable.
See you on the trails,
Jennylynne
